Every dollar accounted for. No hidden fees. No surprises at the finance desk. Here is exactly what you pay — and how Iowa compares to surrounding states.
What Makes Up Your Out-the-Door Price?
Your out-the-door price is the total cost to drive a vehicle off the lot. At Jensen Ford, we believe you should know every line item before you walk in the door — not after you sit down at the finance desk.
Vehicle Price
The agreed-upon price of the vehicle. This is the Jensen Price you see on our website — already discounted from MSRP with all eligible rebates applied.
Iowa Fee-for-New-Registration (5%)
Iowa charges a one-time 5% fee on the purchase price. Trade-in value reduces the taxable amount. This replaces traditional sales tax.
Title Fee ($35)
Flat fee set by the State of Iowa for issuing a new vehicle title in your name. Increased from $25 to $35 as of January 1, 2025.
Annual Registration (prorated to birth month)
Based on a percentage of MSRP that decreases by vehicle age. New vehicles are approximately 1% of MSRP. In Iowa, your registration renews on your birthday — so when you buy, you pay from now until your next birth month, not a flat 12 months.
Electronic Registration ($15)
This covers instant plate transfer with the state. If you are trading in and transferring plates, this means your plates are live in the state system the moment you drive off the lot. No lag. No confusion. If you get pulled over on the way home, your plates come back as your new vehicle — not the one sitting back on our trade-in lot.
Lien Fee ($20)
Applies only when financing. This records the lender's lien with the county so the title is protected until the loan is paid off. If you pay cash, this fee does not apply.
Doc Fee ($180)
Jensen Ford charges one flat $180 document fee. This covers all dealer paperwork — title processing, registration filing, lien recording, and out-of-state title transfers. No other dealer fees.
Why $180? The Jensen Ford Doc Fee
Every dealership charges a document fee. It covers the cost of processing paperwork — title applications, lien filings, registration submissions, and state reporting. The difference is how much they charge and what else they tack on.
Jensen Ford charges $180. Period. No dealer prep fee. No delivery charge. No advertising surcharge. No nitrogen tire fill. No paint protection package slipped into your paperwork. One fee, clearly disclosed, every time.
Our doc fee also covers out-of-state title transfers at no additional charge. Buying from out of state? You still pay vehicle price plus $180. We handle the title paperwork between Iowa and your home state.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is out-the-door pricing?
Out-the-door pricing is the total amount you pay to drive a vehicle home. It includes the vehicle price, sales tax, title fee, registration, and any dealer fees. At Jensen Ford, we break down every line item so there are no surprises.
What fees does Jensen Ford charge?
Jensen Ford charges one fee: a $180 document fee. That covers all dealer paperwork including title processing, registration filing, and lien recording. We do not charge dealer prep fees, delivery fees, advertising fees, or any other add-on charges.
How much is sales tax on a car in Iowa?
Iowa charges a 5% one-time registration fee on the purchase price of a vehicle. This replaces the traditional sales tax. If you trade in a vehicle, the taxable amount is reduced by your trade-in value.
How much does it cost to title a car in Iowa?
The Iowa title fee is $35. This is a flat fee set by the state and applies to all vehicle purchases regardless of price.
How is Iowa vehicle registration calculated?
Iowa annual registration is based on a percentage of the vehicle MSRP that decreases each year. New vehicles pay 1% of MSRP for the first two years, then the rate drops by 0.1% each year until it reaches a minimum flat fee. Registration is prorated to your birth month — in Iowa, your vehicle registration renews on your birthday.
What is the $15 electronic registration fee?
The electronic registration fee covers instant plate transfer with the State of Iowa. This is especially valuable when you are trading in a vehicle and transferring your plates. The instant transfer means your plates are updated in the state system immediately — so if you get pulled over on the drive home, your plates come back as your new vehicle, not the one you just traded in. Worth every penny.
What is the $20 lien fee?
The lien fee is a state charge that applies when you finance a vehicle. It records the lender's interest with the county so the title is protected until the loan is paid off. If you pay cash, this fee does not apply.
Do I pay tax upfront when financing?
When you finance with a Jensen Ford lender, tax, title, registration, electronic registration, and lien fee are all rolled into your loan. You pay one monthly payment and we handle the rest. If you pay cash or use outside financing, you pay the vehicle price plus $180 doc fee at Jensen Ford and handle tax, title, and registration at your county treasurer.
Does a trade-in reduce my taxes?
Yes. In Iowa, your trade-in value is subtracted from the purchase price before the 5% fee is calculated. A $5,000 trade-in on a $30,000 vehicle means you pay the fee on $25,000 instead of $30,000.
Does Iowa charge sales tax on out-of-state buyers?
No. Out-of-state buyers pay the vehicle price plus $180 doc fee at Jensen Ford. No Iowa sales tax. Jensen Ford covers the title transfer at no extra charge. You handle your home-state sales tax and registration at your local DMV after purchase.
Which surrounding state has the highest vehicle fees?
Illinois, by a wide margin. The Illinois title fee is $165 (Iowa is $35), and sales tax ranges from 6.25% to over 10% depending on your municipality. Wisconsin recently raised its title fee to $214.50. Minnesota charges 6.875% sales tax. Iowa's 5% rate and $35 title fee are among the most competitive in the region.
Are there any hidden fees at Jensen Ford?
No. Jensen Ford charges the vehicle price and a $180 doc fee. That is it. We do not add nitrogen tire fees, paint protection packages, delivery charges, or any other line items that inflate the price after you agree to a deal.
